From 6-8 December 2014 I did a new high-density laser survey of the eastern portions of Canterbury Cathedral. 88 stations, 5 billion points, and all highly accurate (less than 5 mm total error). My hope is to better understand the structural system of the twelfth century building, in particular the flying buttresses.
I am grateful to the Very Reverend Robert Willis, Dean of Canterbury Cathedral, to the Clerk of the Works Mark Sharratt, to the Vergers, and most especially to head electrician Steve Buchan, who accompanied me throughout and was an invaluable help. I am also grateful to Benjamin Outrey and Marie-Caroline Rondeau of Leica Geosystems France. Funding was provided by the Gabrielle Snyder Beck Fund at Vassar College.
