It comes as somewhat of a surprise to see the very famous Christian image of the Holy Family's "Flight into Egypt" echoed almost line for line in the Golden Haggadah, a manuscript produced for Jews, probably in Barcelona around 1320. But "almost" is the key word here, for there are fascinating differences in the way the motif appears in this Jewish context that speak volumes about the relationship between Jews and Christians in the Middle Ages, and the ways in which they imagined the protagonists of their sacred narratives, and, indeed, the road to the redemption of the entire world.
