“Love your neighbor as yourself.” What could be easier? In fact, the “commandment of love” is among the oddest and most difficult to observe of all the bible’s injunctions. How can affection be commanded? How can attachment be legislated? The early rabbinic period of Jewish history is rich in approaches to this subject. We’ll be looking at the approaches of Hillel and Jesus, and learning how each comments on and enriches the other.
