Kabbalistic re-imaginings
of the Tree of Life
Visual traditions of the Kabbalists often incorporated the image of the Tree of Life—the array of the Sefirot, the potencies or emanations of God. But this was no run-of-the-mill tree, rather it was a tree with roots in Heaven and branches on earth. The variety of manners and modes, types and styles of representing the Tree is truly stunning, and we will explore together the social, historical and spiritual implications of the stunning array of possibilities for visualization of the abstract and transcendent in a manner that links it with the earth, the environment, nature, and our souls.
