SUKKOT

Dwelling Under the Stars:
The Sukkot of  “Sukkah City” and Sukkot in History

For a number of years now, there have been encampments of temporary shelters erected for the Jewish harvest festival Sukkot by contemporary artists and architects in Manhattan’s Union Square and elsewhere around the country. These highly creative re-imaginings of the traditional sukkah respond to the challenge to design a temporary shelter that fits the parameters of Jewish law, but that brings to the project all the creativity of the twenty-first century and beyond. We will examine this project in the light of the construction of sukkot throughout history.
