Course description

The aim of this bi-weekly senior seminar is to work with seniors on the thesis project — a requirement of the Vassar College Sociology Department. It is organized around a series of meetings to help students build their senior thesis. During the fall, the focus is on framing a thesis topic, developing a thesis proposal, conducting research, analyzing date, and the challenges of the writing process. Spring semester will concentrate on the thesis as a whole, and the steps to completion and presentation, in addition to discussions regarding life skills as professionals, and the job market. These two semesters will help you:

  1. to question, imagine and create sociological arguments;
  2. to use collaborative methods—the proseminar, peer review, etc.—to learn and grow as scholars and facilitate the completion of the thesis;
  3. and to socialize into the professional and intellectual habits of sociologists.
Throughout both semesters, the class will value collaboration, imagination, passion and community building. Attendance is strictly required.
