A. The construction würde + infinitive is sometimes called the "conditional" and is equivalent to the English would + infinitive. As with the modal verbs and the future tense, the infinitive goes to the end of the main clause.

Würde sie im Studentenheim wohnen? Das würde ich nie tun.

Would she live in the dorm? I would never do that.

B. Würde + infinitive may be used:

• For making hypothetical conclusions.
  

  Wir würden unsere Freunde vermissen.

  We would miss our friends.

• For expressing polite requests.
  

  Würdest du bitte ein wenig lauter sprechen? Würden Sie bitte mehr darüber sagen?

  Would you please speak a bit louder? Would you please say more about that?

• For making wishes.
  To express wishes with the würde-construction, the conjunction wenn(if) and the word nur(only) are used.
  

  Wenn sie nur anrufen würde! Wenn ich nur ein Stipendium bekommen würde!

  If only she would call! If only I would get a scholarship!

NOTE: The würde + infinitive construction is generally not used with the verbs haben, sein, and the modal verbs.
