1. The verb gefallen expresses pleasure or displeasure in a non-emotional fashion:

Dieses Bild gefällt mir.	I like this picture.
Dieses Bild gefällt mir sehr. Dieses Bild gefällt mir gut. Dieses Bild gefällt mir sehr gut.	I like this picture very much.
Dieses Bild gefällt mir nicht.	I don't like this picture.

For emphasis, sehr, gut, sehr gut can be added; all correspond to "very much". The verb gefallen is used like the English "to please". Its subject is the thing or person that is liked or disliked. Its dative object is the person who has these feelings.

2. Mögen is more emotionally-colored than gefallen:

Ich mag dieses Bild nicht.	I don't like this picture.
Wir mögen das Buch nicht.	We don't like this book.

Mögen is used with food or drinks.

Mögen Sie Käse?	Do you like cheese?
Mögen Sie Milch?	Do you like milk?

It is very common to use gern with the verbs essen and trinken instead:

Essen sie gern Käse?	Do you like to eat cheese?
Trinken Sie gern Milch?	Do you like to drink milk?

3. gern haben is used in the sense of "to be fond of":

Ich habe sie gern, aber ich liebe sie nicht.

I am fond of her, but I don't love her.

4. People one finds pleasant and likeable are often said to be sympatisch:

Sie ist mir sympatisch.	I like her. (in the sense: I find her interesting/engaging)
Sie ist mir nicht sympatisch / unsympatisch.	I don't like her.

The position of "gern"
gern is an adverb of manner; it usually follows adverbs of time and precedes adverbs of place:

Ich möchte morgen gern ins Kino gehen.

Tomorrow I like to go to the movies.

It follows pronoun objects:

Ich helfe Ihnen gern.

I like to help you.

It either follows or precedes noun objects:

Essen Sie gern Fisch? / Essen Sie Fisch gern?

Do you like to eat fish?

It usually precedes prepositional phrases and verb complements:

Ich spreche gern mit ihm	I like to talk to him.
Sie spielt gern Tennis.	She likes to play tennis.

Exception: When used with haben, gern is a verb complement and stands at the end of the clause:

Ich habe dich sehr gern.

I like you a lot.
