Photocopies of short stories, essays, and poems, which will be distributed
in class.
Requirements:
|
Active participation in class discussions and regular attendance of all
class meetings is mandatory in this class. If you cannot come to class
one day because of sickness or other serious problems, please let me know
in advance so that I can save handouts etc. for you. (You can easily reach
me via e-mail which I check regularly.) If you nevertheless miss more than
three times unexcused, your oral grade (= one third of your final grade)
will be automatically lowered by one grade. |
|
Thorough preparation for class and the faithful and diligent completion
of all the reading assignments are absolutely crucial in this class. Often
you will get questions that are supposed to help you focus on important
parts of the (sometimes long) readings. It is very important that you are
able to answer and talk about all of these questions. Always take notes
and mark your own text when you do the reading. |
|
Each student will give two short oral reports on topics of his or her choice
in class (about 15 minutes). One will be on the biography of an author,
the other one concerns a historical or theoretical topic. You will get
a list with suggestions for topics at the beginning of class. |
|
You will write four essays. The essay grades constitute 33% of your final
grade. |
|
Finally, we have a midterm and a final in this class. These exams mainly
test factual knowledge and will be qualitatively different from you interpretative
essays. |
