April 16, 2012 Dr. Moshe Cohen Matroid Theory (Oxley)

Abstract: A matroid is the simultaneous abstraction of a matrix and a graph, using notions of independence and dependence that you should be familiar with from linear algebra.

April 23, 2012 Anna Zarkh Braid Groups

Abstract: The Braid group has many equivalent definitions and geometric interpretations. We will focus on the definition of the Braid group as the mapping class group of the punctured disc. The algebraic presentation, using generators and relations, has an intuitive interpretation in this geometric model and we will discuss such connections.

The braid group, using this model, arises naturally in the study of singularities of complex algebraic curves. Such approach is described in detail in BGT1 paper by Teicher and Moishezon.

April 30, 2012 Uriya First Representations of groups and applications to algorithms

Abstract: Representations theory learns groups by trying to understand them as linear operator (or, alternatively, matrices).

We will review the basics of representation theory of finite groups, presenting group algebras, Mascke's Theorem and bit of the theory of characters.

With this in our pocket, we will show how this theory can be used in computer science for fast polynomial multiplication, fast matrix multiplication and other computations. In particular, we can understand the Fast Fourier Transform algorithms via representations.

Note: In the lecture we will present tensors of vector spaces. They appear frequently in many areas of mathematics so it's good to know them, representation theory or not...

May 7, 2012 Michael Twito Dynamical Systems

Abstract: A dynamical system is a concept in mathematics where a fixed rule describes the time dependence of a point in a geometrical space. We will focus on two dimensional, continuous dynamical systems (which are simply a pair of ordinary differential equations), and hopefully we will get to the notion of limit cycles and Hilbert’s 16th problem. This meeting is based on (a small fraction of) the course 88-809 given by Prof. Schiff.

Further examples for this talk were prepared using the Dynamical Systems Applet.

May 14, 2012 -- --

No seminar. Instead students are invited to attend the two talks by this year's winners of the Wolf Prize in Mathematics!

May 21, 2012 Dr. Fei Ye Introduction to Cohen-Macaulay rings

Abstract: Cohen-Macauly rings are a special type of commutative rings. In this talk, I will try to explain the geometry meaning of Cohen-Macauly rings and some interesting results about Cohen-Macauly rings.

May 28, 2012 -- --

No seminar. Instead students are invited to attend the 2012 meeting of the Israel Mathematical Union.

June 4, 2012 Michael Twito Dynamical Systems II

Abstract: We will go deeper into non-linear systems, some bifurcations and hopefully, this time - limit cycles.

June 11, 2012 Oren Rimer Calculating phase transition temperature

Abstract: What mathematical machinery is used to investigate the phenomenon of solids turning into liquids? We will use the renormalization group approach that relies on scale-invariance and dynamical systems to investigate the most simple model of phase transition in magnets: the Ising model. and eat broken glass in small lettering.

June 18, 2012 Yuval Kachatryan Generating functions and special numbers

Abstract: We will explain what generating function is and use it to solve some recurrence relations that occur (such as Catalan numbers, Bernoulli numbers) often in different areas.

June 25, 2012 Yuval Cyclic Sieving
