A Field Guide to Haredi Society

Previous

Misidentified as “ultra-orthodox,” and misrepresented as backward and “medieval,” contemporary Haredi Jews are a sophisticated, politically savvy group as likely to be spiritually bankrupt as spiritually deep, religiously ignorant as religiously knowledgeable. Most importantly, they are stunningly diverse, not monolithic at all. In short, they are more like us in our wider and more liberal Jewish communities than we imagine. Learn “who’s who” in the Haredi world from one who has been there up close and personal— history, sociology and politics. A fascinating glimpse into a closed, yet very post-modern group of communities.
