An enigmatic image in the Sarajevo Haggadah, believed by some to represent God resting on the Sabbath, is the springboard for our discussion of the representation of the Sabbath in art, and the use of art as a midrash to explain and interpret what Abraham Joshua Heschel called “a Temple in time.”
