Special note:
Academic accommodations are available for students registered with the Office for Accessibility and Educational Opportunity. Students in need of ADA/504 accommodations should schedule an appointment with me early in the semester to discuss any accommodations for this course which have been approved by the Office for Accessibility and Educational Opportunity, as indicated in your AEO accommodation letter.

Attendance and class participation

Class participation entails having read the required readings by the date they are scheduled and coming to class prepared to discuss them, as well as taking part in the unscheduled exercises conducted in class and on Moodle. Attendance is mandatory, and missing more than two classes will hurt your final grade. Additionally, students are required to attend the lectures in the Urban Talk series outside of class time.

Policy on student computers: Students are welcome to use laptop computers and iPads in this classroom. However, they must turn off texting, e-mail, Facebook, and other social media. Violating this policy more than once will result in the student being forbidden from bringing their personal technology into the classroom. Furthermore, students may not use smart phones (much less regular mobile phones) at any time in this classroom.

Community study of Poughkeepsie

Students will work in groups of 2-3, conducting research in the field (i.e., taking individual trips into Poughkeepsie) and the archives, but will turn in individual 5-page reports by September 20.

Take-home midterm

A take-home midterm will be given out on October 2. It will be due at the beginning of the next class, on October 4.

Capital investment role play and brief

Students will lead a group role-play exercise in class on Thursday, November 8. By midnight that day, each student will turn in a two-page brief discussing the outcomes and lessons of the exercise. Instructions for the assignment will be handed out on the day the exercise is scheduled.

Paradigm city project

Students will work in groups of 4 on a semester-long research project that theorizes the paradigmatic quality of a particular city.

Take-home final exam

A take-home final will be given out on December 6. It will be due at the beginning of class on December 11 — the last day of regular classes.
