Cultural Breezing in through the double doors on a Saturday aftenoon, I set down my gazillion shopping bags and glance up toward the wall panels at the wide selection of gourmet coffees and teas. After carefully pondering whether or not to try the holiday specials, I decide to go with the usual. Along with my double espresso sugar-free caramel skim latte with whipped cream and caramel sauce doused on top, I order two packages of chocolate covered smores cookies and a small, quaint tin of after-coffee breath mints since I had begun to run out although I did just buy one last week. Sinking into a plush, deep purple couch with a charming swirly pattern, I happen to notice that the exact same pattern is decorating my coffee cup! How clever! As I take my first sip, I realize with frustration that I forgot to stop in at Saks to buy those leather gloves I've been dying to have. But I relax to the comforting jazz music and soft hum of people's voices around me, and decide that I can simply go tomorrow..... Shopping, in this case for coffee, has come to be associated with the symbolic and somewhat intangible quality of aesthetic appearance. In oreder to be successful, it has become essential that stores present their products in this calculated, pleasing-to-the-eye manner. Starbucks specifically targets a certain class of patrons with its tastefully inviting array of seating options from comfortable armchairs and couches to classic small tables and chairs, all under the light of modernly styled lamps. These patrons are the people with money. They appreciate the consistency of this enormous chain, which promises that they can get their caramel macchiatos in their hometown, at work in the city, or in a foreign country, such as Japan. At every location Starbucks lovers are ensured the same welcoming atmosphere with upbeat jazz music playing in the background. They can sit and enjoy the Starbucks ambiance or they can buy coffee and bring it home to brew on their very own Starbucks manufactured espresso machines. Coffee gift sets for friends and co-workers are also available. Amidst the low key drum of conversation, Starbucks is the perfect destination for a midday coffee break or leisurely late night chatting. |
